NAJEE — Beyond the Smooth

For more than four decades, Najee has remained one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz — an artist whose sound has always existed comfortably between jazz, soul and R&B.

Emerging in the 1980s with Najee’s Theme, he became part of a generation that helped reshape the relationship between jazz and contemporary Black music. Yet Najee’s career has never simply been about fitting into a genre. His soprano saxophone and flute have developed into an instantly recognizable musical voice — melodic, soulful and deeply rooted in feeling.

Along the way, he has worked with an extraordinary range of artists, from Prince and Chaka Khan to Freddie Jackson and many others, while building a recording career that has endured through dramatic changes in both the music industry and the way audiences discover music.

What makes Najee particularly interesting today is that longevity has never turned into nostalgia. He continues to record, perform and evolve while retaining the musical identity that first connected him with audiences nearly forty years ago.

In this conversation with DJ Soulswede I Soulinterviews.com, Najee reflects on the journey behind the music, the artists and experiences that shaped him, and what it means to sustain a creative life across generations.

This is not simply a conversation about a career.

It is a conversation about musicianship, longevity — and finding a voice that remains unmistakably your own.
