Dru Hill - InDRUpendence Day (Advance)
indrupendencedayDru Hill's fourth release and first for the Kedar label, InDRUpendence Day is a rare entity a long anticipated reunion that actually lives up to its hype. Easily the best of the Baltimore-bred quartet's offerings since their self titled debut back in 1996 (has it really been that long?!), InDRUpendence Day is a vibrant reminder of what made Dru Hill notable in the first place slamming beats, crisp yet raw production, and most importantly the vocal talents of Sisqo, Nokio, Jazz and new member Tao (pronounced Tay-Oh) that have gotten more soulful, confident and romantic with age.

Shifting into gear with "Shut It Down," which heralds the groups' return with an attitude laden club banger and there's no shortage of great party joints here. The dark, nearly ominous groove of "Below Zero" is a slamming kiss-off to an icy ex-lover that climaxes with some truly sick vocal acrobatics brimming with passion and anger. At the other end of the spectrum is the breezy confection of "Whatcha Do," that has just enough of a funky bounce to save it from frivolity.

Of course, this wouldn't be a Dru Hill album without the baby making jams and some panties are definitely going to be crooned off by jams like the self explanatory "Makin Luv," an atmospheric and scintillating throb of a slow jam anchored by an undertow of talk box background vocals and Sisqo's impassioned and accomplished lead performance. Quiet Storm lovers will also dig the sensuous "Remain Silent" and the album's lead off single, "Love MD."

The final track is also the best: an out of left field and absolutely killer take on Tears For Fears' 1980's classic "Rule The World," featuring fervent and transcendent performances from all four members making the songs conscious message about the passage of time all the more moving.

Rating: 8/10
