I'm a producer, songwriter, & musician currently based out of Nashville, Tennessee [USA]. There is one thing about 'me' that definitely sums me up in a big way... I am crazy about music! My whole life has revolved around it. It's impossible for me to imagine myself doing anything else but music. So, here I am.. in 2010.. and almost 25 years since I made my very first recording on my trusty little 4-track cassette tape machine. I am still making music. Welcome to my world! :-) I grew up listening to just about anything I could get my hands on! There was always lots of soul, R&B, 70s disco.. you name it! I was in love with Natalie Cole when I was 6 years old (my first singer-obsession). Eventually, I discovered 'Songs In The Key Of Life'. I was too young to truly understand and appreciate Stevie Wonder's genius at the time. But, isn't it amazing that I am still listening to that album more than 30 years later!? I was lucky enough to grow up in an era with lots of great music as a kid. Then.. when Prince came on the scene with 'Purple Rain' in 1984, a whole new world opened up for me as a young aspiring musician. I found an appreciation for music that transcends genre, race, culture, etc. Today, I definitely I have very diverse, eclectic tastes in music.. for which I am truly grateful. You should see my iPod!! I'd say my main influences have been people like Sade, Luther Vandross, Seal, Bryan Loren, Chuckii Booker, Daryl Coley, Sting, Nile Rogers, Jeff Lorber, David Gamson, and of course.. Prince (who inspired me to pursue a music career in the 1st place). After graduating from University of Miami (with a business marketing degree of all things), I imagined my life as a aspiring recording artist would continue as planned. I figured I would be able to work in the marketing field if this whole singing career thing didn't work out. Yet, I was surprised to discover I had other interests relating to all things 'technical' and 'behind the scenes'. I even went back to school for audio engineering.. finishing at the top of my class and feeling re-energized within a very competitive field. But, I had been neglecting my first love of producing, writing, and just making good music. These days I am embarking on a whole new journey in my career. I am excited to be able to put everything that I have learned over the years into a full-length album ('WAYOUT'). I am working to become more visible professionally and bring more awareness to what I do as a musician, producer, writer, graphic designer, you name it. I definitely have found my own voice musically and personally; that is really big. I really love having the freedom to work in a more independent music environment; it is inspiring. The 'rules' have changed drastically over the years.. so.. I don't have many rules other than 'just do it!' My feeling is.. if you want something in life or career, you have to go get it.. believe in yourself.. have passion.. and never give up on a desire to do what you love. If there is something you are looking to do in life.. do it right now! One thing that I am really proud of is the way I've always been able to make what little technology I've had over the years sound good. In my earlier recordings, I did my best to use restraint and try to be more clever in my approach to producing and building layers of instruments.. because I didn't have an unlimited amount of resources. I had to figure out a way to make everything sound as professional as possible. Not much has changed since then. At times it can be a little challenging to achieve the sonic quality I'd like. But, I didn't want to let anything keep me from moving forward or cause me to question whether or not my work holds up to any standards out there. Life is not long enough to waste time wondering if you are good enough, worrying about what people are going to think, or feeling limited in any way. These days I feel 'at home' in those big studios with all the bells and whistles.. because at the end of the day.. give me just a few pieces of recording gear and I can make it work.~ Lenny Biography courtesy of Lenny Hamilton Jr's Official SitePlaylist:01 - Lenny Hamilton Jr - Be02 - Lenny Hamilton Jr - Bring it Back03 - Prince - Purple Rain (Snippet)04 - Lenny Hamilton Jr - Beat Goe Zon05 - Lenny Hamilton Jr - Run06 - Lenny Hamilton Jr - OutTheBoxBackground music during the interview:Lenny Hamilton Jr - Wayout, Lenny Hamilton Jr - The One, Lenny Hamilton Jr - Sistah,  George Duke - Brazilian Love Affair, Stevie Wonder - Black Man, Prince - When Doves Cry,  Lenny Hamilton Jr - Cameo Life, Lenny Hamilton Jr - Believe In Me, Lenny Hamilton Jr - Come On Over, Lenny Hamilton Jr - The One, Lenny Hamilton Jr - Walk Away, Lenny Hamilton Jr - What's UP! He is a singer-songwriter, record producer and, more recently, a radio personality. Before becoming a recording artist, Sweat worked for the commodities market in the New York Mercantile Exchange. He sang at nightclubs throughout New York City until he was discovered and offered a recording contract with Elektra Records in 1987. Sweat started his musical career as a member of a Harlem band called "Jamilah" in 1975. With the help of Jamilah, Sweat was able to hone his craft as a lead singer by performing regionally throughout the tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The group was started by bassist Larry Peoples, guitarist Michael Samuels, and drummer Walter Bradley. Additional members of the group included Peter DaCosta (vocals), Joseph McGeachy (sax), Dwight Banks (trumpet), and Kenneth Varner (keyboards). On November 25, 1987, Sweat released his debut solo album Make It Last Forever, which sold four million copies. The biggest hit from this album was "I Want Her" (#1 R&B/#5 Pop), while the title track from the album hit #2 on the R&B charts. Sweat reached the charts again with his second album I'll Give All My Love to You (1990) which hit #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, and Keep It Comin'(1991) which debuted in the top 20 of the album chart. The latter album did not sell as well because Keith did not promote it. The singles released during this period included "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again" (from the film New Jack City), "Why Me Baby" (featuring LL Cool J) and "Keep It Comin'". Sweat then moved from New York to Atlanta, where he founded the Keia Records label that would feature Silk & Kut Klose. Sweat released his fourth album Get Up on It in the summer of 1994, and his self-titled fifth album in 1996. Both albums reached the top ten on the Billboard 200. The single "Twisted" hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Nobody" hit #3, which made them Sweat's biggest hits to date. The song "Just A Touch", with Kut Klose providing background vocals, has earned a regular spot on radio playlists. "Just A Touch" was a cover of the 1979 song "Just a Touch of Love" by Slave. Sweat's sixth album, Still in the Game was released in 1998, hitting #6 on the Billboard 200, and #2 on the R&B/Hip Hop albums chart. It featured the singles "Come and Get With Me" (which featured Snoop Dogg) (#12 Hot 100) and "I'm Not Ready" (#16 Hot 100). Sweat's success on the charts started to diminish in 2000, when he released the album Didn't See Me Coming. None of the singles from the album reached the top forty. They were moderate hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. On August 13, 2002, Keith Sweat released his ninth album, Rebirth. The single "One on One" reached #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #44 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. His 2008 album Just Me fared better with its first single, "Love U Better (featuring Keyshia Cole)" being played on Urban radio stations for about a year before the album's release. In Spring of 2010, Sweat released the song "Test Drive," featuring Joe. It was the first single from his album, Ridin' Solo, which was released in June 2010 to mixed reviews.Biography courtesy of Chris Rizik and SoulTracksSoulinterviews.com's additional comments:Keith Sweat is currently running his own radio show "The Sweat Hotel", syndicated in over 48 markets. Not because there aren't or wont be other geniuses to follow but because he was unique unto himself. He was aloof yet caring having donated numerous amounts of money to charities. There is a price to pay for genius in this world because it sets one apart and puts one in the position of being original in a world that is trapped into a programmed mindset that seeks to attack or tear down those who stand above the status quo. Michael Jackson was an original; a child man who maintained a degree of innocence so that his art form tapped into a untethered purity imbued with wonderment and imagination. Because his heart was so pure it could not withstand the cruel accusations and betrayals of the Judases who sought to see his love for children as something vile or his whitened skin as something more than his affliction with the disease Vitiligo. King Michael had the Midas touch when it came to music, dance and fashion and was an astute businessman as well. Once on stage, Jackson was thrilling and mind blowing. The seventh child of the Jackson family, Michael debuted with his brothers as part of the Jackson 5 in the mid 1960's until he went solo in 1971. He went on to become an immense figure in the entertainment business obtaining crossover appeal for his records and videos like "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Thriller." In fact, "Thriller" is the best selling album of all time with "Off the Wall," "HiStory," "Bad" and "Dangerous" a close second. Michael captured 13 Grammy Awards, 13 No. 1 singles in the U.S., 26 American Music Awards and held the distinction of "Artist of the Century" and "King of Pop." Mr. Jackson sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide. It was recently reported that the Jackson estate has reached a billion dollars in sales since Jackson's passing. MJ Impersonators Michael Firestone, Pete Carter and 11-year-old Ivan Kelly brought the house down when they honored Michael via their tribute show "Michael Jackson: The King of Pop" held at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, in the Bronx, on Saturday, June 26th (the day after the anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing on June 25, 2009 due to cardiac arrest) in tribute to Michael Jackson: The King of Pop. "This was a never seen before or seen again production. It was like no other. With the all-star dancers performing unbelievable dance numbers to Jackson's many songs and the GospeLive choir doing harmonies, it was an all out effort to pay tribute to the great Michael Jackson" said the show producer Steve Love. The show was phenomenal including Djs, percussionists, video jockeys and of course the three well respected Michael Jackson impersonators and tribute artists. It was an extravaganza that had the audience in awe. Mothers brought infants who surprisingly didn't cry during the concert. Toddlers were there and children and adults of all ages and races. People got so caught up in the performance they were shouting "Michael, Michael" at the impersonators who for that evening at least brought Michael Jackson back to life for many who later begged for autographs, anxious to touch the sleeve of the look-alikes in hopes of capturing the essence of their enduring King. Love wafted through the air as the entire audience gave a silent moment in honor of Michael. It was so touching that 11-year old Michael Jackson impersonator Ivan Kelley burst into tears. "Usually, it takes me all day to prepare to do a Michael Jackson show. I start 6 hours before the show to get my voice ready," said impersonator Michael Firestone. "It takes about 3 hours to transform into Jackson. I have to white out my face completely and erase my own features with makeup. No one has Michael Jackson's eyes so I have to start with my eyes since eyes are the window to who you are. Once I get his eyes correct, I start on the cheekbones. Michael wore lip liner to conceal the Vitiligo. Usually the disease centers around the eyes, mouth area and hands. Its a gradual change in coloration over time. Thus, Michael had varying shades of coloration which he evened out with heavy makeup as his skin tone gradually whitened. Michael attempted to deal with his disease privately but when folks criticized him he finally revealed his affliction. But still many people didn't believe him. In order to transform into Michael I have studied his life and in some ways channel his persona and psyche. There is always someone in the crowd who is a heckler but since Michael passed the audience has been nice. The Bronx audience certainly was great. I hope people will continue to be kind to Michael's memory and to his children," said Firestone who performs in Las Vegas and across the country. "I met Michael once in person all of 5 minutes but then later he called and we talked awhile. I had purchased up front tickets to catch the "This Is It," concert in England but of course Michael died before he was able to do his farewell concerts." Child prodigy Ivan Kelley (aka Lil' Man) was reminiscent of a young Michael Jackson. As a result of Kelley's appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show, he was invited to tour with hip hop artist Acon. "It's very rare to find a young person whose voice is so similar to the young Michael. I like to think that Michael would be very proud of these impersonators who pay tribute to him," remarked the show producer. "I worked feverishly on the dance numbers in order to honor Michael. As you saw, we did many of his popular routines," said Pete Carter who met Jackson several times. "I have been to Neverland and visited Michael in L.A., when he was rehearsing the "This Is It" London concert. I've been impersonating him for 10 years. I last saw him in April 2009. Michael was such a sweet person. He truly loved his fans and took the time to sign autographs whenever asked. In fact, he signed his signature on my back and I immediately had it permanently tattooed there. Michael was excited about doing the "This Is It" concerts. He was feeling good although he was thinner than I had ever seen him before. I felt his bones when we hugged and this surprised me. I looked forward to performing at Lehman Center because everyone wanted to truly honor Michael as the great "King of Pop'" said the renowned MJ impersonator. One of the greatest performers the world has ever seen and beloved throughout the world, Michael Jackson will be sorely missed. "Like a comet blazing across the evening sky, Michael's Gone too Soon. Like a rainbow fading in the twinkling of an eye, he's "Gone too Soon."Farewell, Michael. The new modern man is a man of presence. He knows how to command respect, but remain humble. Readily assuming responsibility for his community, the new modern man strives to be a model of character, integrity, and principles for young eyes still seeking examples of an upright walk. A God-fearing family man and faithful friend, he is a loyal protector and an open, compassionate ear. Battle-tested, the new modern man tirelessly pursues his vision, using every tool, talent, and resource endowed to him for purpose. The new modern man is Marcell Russell, the founder and voice of Marcell & The Truth. The new soul leader of honest music, Marcell & The Truth (M&TT) is the living realization of partying with a purpose. A volunteer mainstay for their local Baltimore, Maryland arts, youth and fatherhood programs, M&TT brings their true-to-life stories and uplifting melodies to reflect and affirm their fans' everyday experiences. Troubadours of blue-collar love, Marcell wraps his warm baritone around rhythms meant to move couples to squeeze reassuring hands, sway hip to hip, and step in unison to songs that honor the heights and trials of their soul connections. Following the timeless traditions of such luminaries as Rufus, The Spinners, and Frankie Beverly and Maze, M&TT cultivates classic sounds that reunites lovers, restores families, and rejuvenates block parties around the globe. At 6'3, the towering Marcell Russell, 33, represents the grown man missing in urban music today, both in stature and in voice an heir to Luther, Freddie, and Gerald. Once a young musical minister, Russell spread the "good news" up and down the Eastern Seaboard before becoming disenchanted by organized religion and the limitations of its reach. No longer satisfied to literally preach to the choir, the graduate of Morgan State's revered music program, took his church, jazz and classical training and infused it into a unique, yet accessible secular music meant to inspire, encourage, and cause listeners to reflect in much the way his ministry did a decade before. No longer of its ivory tower, Russell brings the distilled message of the church to the world, a message based in love and celebrating responsibility. After a brief stint with a band that gave birth to the 11-year partnership between Russell and former songwriting partner William "Bags" Bagwell, Russell gave birth in 1997 to M&TT. For the next nine years, Russell and Bags rotated through a series of local musicians Russell trained as soldiers for his new movement and dealt with constant struggles by labels interested in Russell but didn't fully "get" the team's vision. Frustration led to ingenuity and entrepreneurship, in 2006 Russell self-released M&TT's debut project, Hopes Too High (Oak Hill Music). The neo-soul disc of live musicians and old school organic R&B immediately received a warm critical reception on both sides of the Atlantic from such publications as the Blues & Soul, Echoes, Essence.com, Soultracks.com, The City Paper, and The Baltimore Sun. In 2007, Hopes Too High was named "Album of the Year" by Chicagosteppers.com, secured "Best R&B Album", "Artist", "Performance," and "Song" Awards by Heatseekers, and was nominated for four SoulTracks Reader's Choice Awards including "Album of the Year." Hopes Too High also boasted steady sells in the DC/MD/VA, L.A., Chicago, New York, Phoenix, and U.K. markets, leading to a sold-out UK tour and over 200 small to mid-size U.S. bookings over the next four years. Not bad for an indie debut, right? For his sophomore project and latest independent release, Symbols (Oak Hill Music), Russell's mission is to speak firmly and lovingly to the hearts, minds, and spiritual conditions of both those living for the city and those keeping up with the Jones. The post-Civil Rights son of academics and professionals, and a respected businessman in his own right, the B-more native is the living embodiment of a comfortable family's high aspirations, but one who still maintained a firm grounding in the struggles of those living on the margins. Russell's new music reflects this tense dichotomy, with romantic proletarian ballads like "All I Know" and "Kinda Like" juxtaposed against spiritual reflections for the striving class through the searing title track, the cautionary "Seed Your Water," and the motivational "Somewhere In Between."Originally released during the 2009 holiday season, the newly re-packaged Symbols is already making noise with singles "You Saved Me," "Seed Your Water," and "Can't Wait" on terrestrial radio in Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Washington, DC and on internet and satellite radio in the UK, L.A., and NYC. Press is also beginning to take notice with Creative Loafing ATL giving Symbols five stars out of five, BET/Centric naming it one of the "Best R&B Male Albums of 2009," a coveted "highly recommended" from SoulTracks.com (where it spent three months as a Top Ten seller), and positive write-ups in Echoes, Prestatyn, Port of Harlem, Mog.com, JazzandSoul.com, SoulChoonz.com, and Amplifyyourvoice.org. "You Saved Me" also helped inspire a documentary on black marriage by filmmakers Lamar and Ronnie Tyler, becoming the film's title and title track. Symbols is everywhere. This elevated interest has compelled Marcell Russell to advance the further realization of his artistic and personal philosophies by launching The New Modern Man movement, more fully stepping into his destiny and responsibility as a man, creator, leader, musician and entrepreneur. The timely substance and consciousness of Symbols is just a calling card for what Russell hopes to be an evolution in thought, action, and art. Shake the hand of the man who plans to move us all, one fan, one song, one action, and one performance at a time. Augie began to play the clarinet at age six; two years later he was playing in the American Legion Band. When he was ten, he joined Bob Mitchell's Boys Choir, and toured with them for four years. He also sang on "High Hopes" with Frank Sinatra. While in junior high Augie took up tenor and alto saxophones, and formed his first band, "The Jazztronauts." During his years at Washington High School, Augie was active in both instrumental and vocal groups, playing in several and forming a couple of his own. Augie went to Los Angeles City College, majored in music, and met Louis Patton. Then the Army got him. Johnson spent his two years as an entertainment specialist—producing and participating in all kinds of functions, both on the base and in the community. By January 1972, Augie was back home in L.A., and he looked up his old friend, Louis Patton. In May of that year, Side Effect was formed. The group has played many clubs in Los Angeles, and has toured Canada. Augie has done lots of session work too, with the Temptations, Mac Davis, Stanley Turrentine, Marvin Gaye, Funk Inc., Leon Haywood, and many others. The birth of Side Effect began in the year 1972 with founder and leader Augie Johnson and members, Lomita Johnson, Jim Gilstrap, Gregory Matta and Louis Patton. It only took a few months before the group signed their first record deal with a company called Avenue of America-Gas Records, with whom they recorded their first album, "Effective". Although this relationship was terminated one year later, Side Effect continued to evolve. They changed female lead vocalists, from Lomita Johnson to Sylvia Nabors, and soon joined At-Home Productions, a production company headed by Wayne Henderson of the Jazz Crusaders. One month later, they signed with Fantasy Records and recorded four albums: Side Effect "What You Need" which has the hit singles, "Always There" and "Keep the Same Old Feeling", "Going Bananas" and "Rainbow Vision". Sylvia Nabors did an excellent job on the first album, but by the time "What You Need" was recorded, Helen Lowe, now gospel superstar Helen Baylor, was the new vocalist. After these four albums were completed, Side Effect left Fantasy Records and was picked up by Elektra Records. In 1990, members of Side Effect formed an all male group which they named "Flawless" under the direction and management of Mick Fleetwood and Dennis Duston. In early 1995, Side Effect reunited and immediately signed with the Dog House Record Label. The leader Augie Johnson continued to add great talent to the group. He also formed another group at that time. The Boppers began as Side Effect's backup band in Los Angeles, but in the early '80's found limited success on their own. Originally just known as the Boppers for their first Fantasy outing in 1978 (including 'Somethings Missing'), they recorded, additionally, for both Mercury and MCA from 1980 until 1982. Followng a band name change to L.A. Boppers they then released the popular tune 'Watching Life'. There followed 'Bop Time' in 1981 and 'Make Mine Bop' in 1982. They enjoyed one Top 30 R & B single, "Is This The Best (Bop-Doo-Wah)," in 1980. The newly revived Side Effect group has added Enchantee Minor, Milton Ellis and Barry Jackson. They have has performed at Disneyland's "New Orleans Square", Orange County Fair, Los Angeles County Fair, Chattanooga Riverbend Festival, and the North Carolina State Fair known as "Sizzle". The artist of Side Effect have worked with: Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, The Temptations, The "Mexican Madonna" (Gloria Trevi), Elton John, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Warren G "Midnight Hour" and a host of others. Movie credits include: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The Power Of One and James Earl Jones', Gabriel's Fire (ABC TV). They are in the upcoming Adam Sandler movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry". Commercial credits include: California Cooler, Cheerios and Mitsubishi.
